Spanish state-owned shipbuilding firm Navantia has reached a construction milestone with the launch of the final Avante 2200 corvettes for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF).

Known as Unayzah, the ship is named after the Unayzah city in the north of Saudi Arabia.

The ship’s launching event was held at the company’s shipyard in San Fernando in the presence of Navantia and RSNF officials.

Corvette Unayzah has a length of 104m and a beam of 14m. It can transport a total of 102 people, including crew members and passengers.

Navantia president Ricardo Domínguez said: “Spain and Saudi Arabia are united by strong and lasting ties and today, given that international collaboration is essential, strengthening an association that already exists is the best way to face the present and the future.”

The Avante 2200 corvette is a multirole vessel capable of supporting surveillance and maritime control, as well as search and rescue (SAR) missions.

The vessel features Navantia’s CATIZ Combat System, the HERMESYS integrated communications system, the DORNA fire direction, the Integrated Platform Control System, and the MINERVA integrated bridge.

It also features equipment such as the MTU motors and RENK gearboxes.
